"Man United vs Leicester City"
"Marcus Rashford's hot streak continues as Manchester United destroys Leicester City."
"By
James Ducker at Old Trafford"
It was informative as a glimpse into the
standards Erik ten Hag is driving at Manchester United. Marcus Rashford had
just put United ahead completely against the flow of play, and the manager had
no sooner allowed himself a quick fist pump in delight when he turned on his
heels and instantly dragged Diogo Dalot over for a few choice words. Ten Hag
made it obvious that he would not accept any more sloppiness from his crew.
Considering how strong United were after the
restart, with Ten Hag's tactical changes working wonders, the Dutchman might
easily have skimmed over the poor start in his post-match news conference. But,
it was revealing that he was throwing down a marker ahead of a crucial week for
the club, with all the takeover rumours threatening to create more
distractions, when he described the first half as a "mess" and
"rubbish," save a superbly executed counter-press for Rashford's first
goal.
Ten Hag will not let things slip. The smallest nuances matter. Nothing is left to chance. The cultural shift from last season is difficult to overstate, and a statement issued by the Manchester United Supporters Trust on Sunday urging bidders for the club to back the manager and "his plans to restore United to glory" will undoubtedly resonate with all fans who recognise what a transformative effect he has had. For the first time since Ferguson, United have the correct manager in charge. The question now is whether they can find the proper owners.

Ten Hag may have waxed lyrical about United's
reaction after the break, and his satisfaction at seeing all that counter-press
work on the training field and via extensive film analysis pay off handsomely,
as it did for the first goal and a fantastic third by Jadon Sancho. But it
didn't strike me as hard as his scathing assessment of the first half, which
carried a clear message: don't let it happen again against Barcelona on
Thursday, or against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final three days later at
Wembley.
Casemiro, who was suspended for three games
against Leicester, will return to stiffen the midfield for both of those games,
and if United can play with the same intensity, fluidity, and swagger as they
did in the second half against Brendan Rodgers' side, Barcelona could be
defeated in the second leg of their Europa League play-off and a first trophy
in six years claimed. Start like they did against Leicester in either of those
games, and it may be a difficult week.
As easy as the final result was, it was only
possible thanks to two great stops by David De Gea, who denied Harvey Barnes
and then Kelechi Iheanacho. The Barnes save - an intuitive, reaction save that
few can match - was really jaw-
United, on the other hand, had another match-winner, Rashford's second goal bringing his season total to a season high 24 for the club with three months still in the season. He has 16 goals in 17 outings since returning from the World Cup, making him the first United player since Wayne Rooney in 2010 to score in seven consecutive home league fixtures. If there is a greater player on form in the world right now than Rashford, he should show it.
This, on the other hand, was a result that bore
all of Ten Hag's fingerprints. His effective in-game management, along with his
hard work on the training field, has swiftly raised United, and the improvement
over what came before feels more obvious by the week. Rodgers and Leicester had
the upper hand to begin with, Casemiro's absence was felt acutely, and had the
Var taken a less lenient view of Marcel Sabitzer's knee high, studs up
challenge on Wout Faes late in the first half, this might have turned into a
very painful day for the hosts.
However, Ten Hag's substitutions at halftime
perplexed Leicester. Alejandro Garnacho was substituted, Rashford went from
center-forward to left, and Wout Weghorst moved up to the No. 10 position,
which was now taken by Sancho. Bruno Fernandes must have been tempted to step
inside. Yet the Portuguese was one of United's few bright spots in the opening
45 minutes, setting up Rashford for the first goal and also Dalot for what
would have been a great team goal, and he created havoc in the second period
from a wider position.
United is scoring some beautiful goals under Ten
Hag, and when his squad gets going, they may be difficult to stop. As Rashford
avoided the offside trap to put United up 2-0, the third goal encapsulated all
that has changed about this squad in only nine months: Lisandro Martinez
rushing to intercept a pass, Sabitzer on there to pick up the lost ball and
immediately cycle it to Rashford; bodies committing forward, all in the ideal
positions to dovetail and inflict maximum damage; the quality and accuracy of
the passing and first touch. Then Rashford found Sancho, who was perfectly
positioned in the middle, to sprint forward, send the ball outside to
Fernandes, and then continue his run, where it was returned for a goal.

The home team took the lead on the quarter-hour mark due to a goal from in-form forward Marcus Rashford, who struck against Danny Ward for his sixth goal in all competitions. United drew away from Leicester in the second half with a one-goal lead at the break. First, Rashford extended his team's advantage with a clinical finish on 56 minutes. The goal that had been disallowed by the assistant referee's offside flag was restored following a VAR review.
After a fantastic one-two with Bruno Fernandes as
he entered the Leicester area, winger Jadon Sancho easily slotted in United's
third goal. United is currently only three points behind second-placed
Manchester City after the win. But, Erik ten Hag's side must now turn their
attention to the Carabao Cup, where they will face Newcastle United in the
final game on Sunday at Wembley Stadium.
"We're close, but the teams ahead of us are
both good and playing terrific football. "We just have to focus on
ourselves, do our best, and keep collecting up points," Rashford told Sky
Sports. With a Europa League second leg against Barcelona and a cup final
against Newcastle on the horizon, United fans will be hoping Rashford's
productive run continues.
"It's early in the season, and we're battling for a lot of different things," Rashford explained. "We have another major game [against Barcelona] in the week to hopefully go to the next round of the Europa League and then a massive game for us [in the cup final]," he continued.
dropping, and De Gea's shutout against Leicester equaled Peter Schmeichel's
United record of 180 clean sheets in all competitions.
