International Mother Language Day 2023: According To UNESCO, around 40 percent of the population globally , does not have access to an education in a language they speak or understand.
Every year , FEBURARY 21 Is celebrated as international Mother Language Day to promote the important of cultural and linguistic diversity in the country. The idea to celebrate this day was the initiative of Bangladesh. It was in1999 when UNESCO General Conference approved it and since then it has been observed throughout the world. UNESCO believes in the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity for sustainable societies. This day celebrated pride and honour by remembering the historical language movement and the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in Bangladesh in 1952. This day is also known as ‘Matribasha Diwas’ and is celebrated with great fervor and joy.

"International Mother Language Day 2023: history And Significance"
This day celebrates languages and multilingualism as significant tools for social inclusion and global development. It seeks to foster the long-term development goals of equity for all. On United Nations Day. Members of the United Nations General Assembly are encouraged in this resolution to take action to conserve and safeguard all languages spoken by people across the world. Language has an important role in bringing about change and progress in human civilisation.
"International Mother Language Day 2023: Theme"
The theme for International Mother Language Day 2023 has not yet been determined. Conversely, the subject for 2022 was "Using technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and possibilities" and 2021 was "Fostering multilingualism for inclusion in education and society".
"International Mother Language Day 2023: Celebrations"
The 24th edition of International Mother Language Day, according to UNESCO, will focus on the theme'multilingual education - a must to reform education.' The UNESCO event on February 21st will investigate and debate the possibilities of multilingualism to revolutionise education from a lifetime learning perspective and in various circumstances.
"Languages must be valued and embraced, not rejected, on International Mother Language Day."
GENEVA (February 20, 2023) — The UN Special Rapporteur on minority problems, Fernand de Varennes, stated today, ahead of International Mother Language Day, that states must be more inclusive in their treatment and use of minority and indigenous languages. He made the following announcement:
"Languages are crucial instruments to communicate and exchange information, memory, and history, but they are also key to full and equal participation. One of the most successful means of empowering minorities and indigenous peoples is to ensure the use of their language in school - particularly as a medium of instruction - for as long as possible, as well as to provide public services and employment opportunities in these languages.

Language rights are also crucial human rights issues for minorities and indigenous peoples alike. Special Rapporteurs, including my own, have already criticised the diminution, and in some cases removal, of instruction in minority and indigenous languages as discriminatory and thinly disguised efforts to integrate minorities and indigenous peoples.
Rather than reducing or even eliminating the use of minority and indigenous languages in education, states should invest in the development of teaching materials, teacher training, and the promotion of mother tongue as a medium of instruction - where possible - to ensure that minority and indigenous children have the literacy and numeracy skills needed to learn other languages, including official languages. In terms of international law, this is the most effective approach of ensuring equality and non-discrimination.
